NASA Chief Astronaut Shares Space Odyssey with BRAC University Students
Bangladeshi students aspiring to become space scientists have recently gained recognition in prestigious global competitions organized by NASA, including the NASA International Space Apps Challenge, the University Rover Challenge, and the Kibo Robot Programming Challenge. Students from institutions like BRAC University, Military Institute of Science and Technology, United International University, and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology have consistently secured awards, including first prizes.
Against this backdrop, BRAC University hosted an engaging event where NASA’s Chief Astronaut, Joseph M. Acaba, shared his experiences in space exploration. The event, titled “From Earth to Orbit: An Astronaut’s Tale”, was held on Sunday, December 15, in a packed auditorium at BRAC University.
In his address, Joseph Acaba captivated the audience with stories of his time in the infinite expanse of space, discussing the challenges and unique experiences of being an astronaut. Students were thrilled to hear firsthand accounts from one of NASA’s top space explorers. Reflecting on the enthusiasm and curiosity displayed by the students, Acaba remarked, “I believe that soon, someone from among you will become part of NASA’s Artemis Squad.”
During the session, students gained insights into various NASA missions and the wonders of space exploration. Acaba emphasized the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education and shared his personal experiences, discussing the scientific marvels of space and the challenges he encountered.
The event began with a welcome speech by Professor Mahbubul Alam Majumdar, Dean of the School of Data and Sciences at BRAC University. Scott E. Hartman, Director of Public Engagement from the U.S. Embassy’s Public Diplomacy Section in Dhaka, also addressed the audience.
Expressing his excitement, Joseph Acaba stated, “Many have told me that I inspire them, but coming here has inspired me. Your thirst for knowledge is overwhelming.” He urged students to focus on their studies, saying, “Education is the only way to turn dreams into reality.” For those aspiring to become astronauts, he advised them to explore NASA’s website, where numerous resources and opportunities are available.
Acaba encouraged students not to fear making mistakes, saying, “Mistakes are valuable lessons. Do not fear them.” He shared anecdotes about his own challenges and how those experiences helped him achieve his dream of becoming an astronaut.
He also spoke about the importance of preserving Earth, stating, “Our planet is beautiful. In space, a single misstep can mean death. Thankfully, that’s not the case on Earth. I don’t believe any other planet is habitable yet, so we must take better care of this one.”
Discussing NASA’s future goals, Acaba added, “NASA’s mission is to explore beyond known boundaries. Collaboration with different countries is crucial, as together, we can achieve much more.”
Acaba also answered curious questions from students about space, such as whether tears form bubbles in zero gravity or why pizza toppings don’t fall off when a slice floats inside a spacecraft.
The event concluded with remarks from BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Farhat Anwar, who encouraged students to pursue space exploration. “I believe that one day, names from BRAC University will appear on the list of astronauts,” he said.
Other notable attendees included Professor Arshad M. Chowdhury, Dean of BSRM School of Engineering, and Professor Sadia Hamid Kazi, Chairperson of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, along with other faculty members and students.
The event was moderated by Khairul Bashar, Director of BRAC University’s Office of Communications.
Joseph M. Acaba, a former U.S. Navy officer and teacher, is an experienced astronaut who has spent a total of 306 days in space and has conducted two spacewalks.
